WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Family and Social Services Administration’s (FSSA) Division of Disability and Rehabilitative Services (DDRS), along with Purdue University’s Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering, announced Tuesday (Sept. 16) that they will fund the Indiana Center for Assistive Technology. The $1.4 million research center will match new advancements in technology with the needs of individuals with disabilities.”Our goal in driving this new research is to create an environment where market forces react to incentives, benefiting our state agencies along with the assistive technology community,” said DDRS director Peter Bisbecos. “Indiana already provides up to $10 million a year in assisting individuals with devices such as hearing aids and touch-screen communication displays. We hope the development of this center will not only enhance these services, but act as a model for the entire nation.”

The center will coordinate demonstration projects to advance assistive technologies and data to support devices that can directly help individuals with disabilities. In addition, the center will create an incubator to assist moving research and new technologies quickly and effectively from the laboratory to the marketplace.

“The Indiana Center for Assistive Technology will be dedicated to the mission of improving the functionality and independence of those with disabilities through the innovation and adoption of assistive technologies,” said Steve Witz, director of the Regenstrief Center, which is located in Purdue’s Discovery Park. “We want to create a way to exchange ideas and help improve the quality of life for those who rely on assistive technologies every day.”

Regenstrief officials formally announced the launch of the Indiana Center for Assistive Technology in conjunction with its daylong fall conference, Transforming Healthcare Delivery: Advancing Multidisciplinary Research at Purdue, at Discovery Park’s Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship.

Purdue and DDRS will partner with BioCrossroads and Fitzgerald & Associates in the development of the Center for Assistive Technology. The Rehabilitation Hospital of Indiana, Crossroads Easter Seals of Indiana; the Indiana University School of Rehabilitation Sciences; and Purdue’s Burton D. Morgan Center for Entrepreneurship, Engineering Projects in Community Services (EPICS) and the Mann Institute for Biomedical Development will all collaborate on the project.

Man in wheelchair killed in hit and run

Family pleads for drivers to come forward

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A disabled man was hit not once, but twice Friday morning by drivers who refused to stop and help.Witnesses say the second driver killed William Whyde, 44, in the 2700 block of South Madison Avenue.

Whyde’s family is making a plea for both drivers to turn themselves in to police.

Cerebral palsy kept Whyde confined to a wheelchair. Police said Whyde was crossing the street when a minivan hit him. A man who had just gotten off work saw what happened, and tried to help Whyde. But after he stepped away to get a cell phone to call 911 another vehicle hit him.

The man who tried to help the victim said, “I made eye contact with the man and he just took off. I feel like it’s my fault he got hit the second time because everybody else was on the phone and I left the man’s side to get a phone.”

“Those individuals involved in hit and run are not only hiding the striking of an individual or car but they also very possibly have been drinking,” said Lt. Jeff Duhamell of the Indianapolis Metro Police Department.

Whyde’s father and brothers say they hope the drivers who hit him will turn themselves in.

“I know somebody knows. There’s no way that two people hit my brother Billy and nobody knows nothing. So whoever it was, please have a conscience and come forward,” said Rick Whyde.

Whyde’s family members said he worked at Lucas Oil Stadium as a ticket taker.

Police said the first vehicle to hit Whyde was a green minivan and the second was a silver Taurus or Malibu.

Anyone with information regarding this case are urged to call Crime Stoppers at 262-TIPS.

Report by Mary McDermott, WISH. Edited by Hyacinth Williams.

Editor’s Note:  Mr. Whyde is just one of hundreds of victims of traffic accidents involving people in wheelchairs across the nation.  For the safety of all wheelchair users it is imperative for vehicle operators to be aware that many use wheelchairs on or near roadways as their only means of transportation. The family and friends of Mr. Whyde have the sympathy of the staff of People On Wheels.

Sled Hockey Demo Excites Fans; Coach wants to ensure disabled athletes hear about Sunday event.

As a boy, Kevin Hughes was a huge Fort Wayne Komets fan, but he was born with spina bifida Myelomeningocele, so playing was never an option.

“It was a passion, but when I grew up, wheelchair basketball was the only thing available in this area,” he said. “Then I saw they had a sled hockey clinic in Chicago, so I drove up and I loved it.”

So you can imagine how excited Hughes is that McMillen Park Ice Arena will host a sled hockey demonstration 4:30-7 p.m. Sunday. The youth services coordinator for the League for the Blind and Disabled, Hughes has been making sure every disabled athlete in the area hears about the opportunity. He’s also the coach of the nationally ranked Turnstone Flyers youth wheelchair basketball team.

“I love basketball and all the other sports, but hockey is by far the most exciting,” he said. “It’s been a very easy transition to get excited about and work hard at.”

Hughes has been known to drive four hours to Chicago for a two-hour sled hockey practice, and last year he played in a Chicago tournament.

The demonstration, co-sponsored by Turnstone, is the idea of Randy Kwapis of Mobility Sports, who moved to Fort Wayne from the Detroit area this summer. His son Matt, a junior at Carroll High School, was also born with spina bifida and has used a wheelchair since age 7.

“Matt has been playing for about three years, but that wasn’t an option here without driving for three hours,” Randy Kwapis said. “It’s really big in Canada, and in the United States there might be 1,200 to 1,500 players. There were maybe 1,000 there years ago.”

Randy Kwapis approached McMillen Ice Arena Manager Dennis Smith about the possibility of an exhibition.

“This is a city rink, and it should be for everyone,” Smith said. “I want everybody to have an opportunity. Sometimes kids take it for granted how easy they have it, and here there are kids and adults who wish they could do what some of those kids could do and they found a way to make it happen.”

Sled hockey uses almost all the rules of a regular hockey game, with checking, passing and line changes. It was invented in Stockholm, Sweden, in the early 1960s and is a popular sport in the Paralympic Games.Players ride sleds, using pegs on the butt end of their two sticks, on a full sheet of ice. The best shooters can supposedly blast the puck nearly 30 mph.

“It’s amazing to watch these guys play,” Kwapis said. “Not only is it awesome to watch them play hockey, but also to see how talented they are at skating, how graceful they are.”

The exhibition will include players form Grand Rapids, Mich., and Columbus, Ohio - along with Hughes. Kwapis, who builds wheelchairs used for sports, is donating most of the equipment. A few of the sleds will be available for the public to try out after the exhibition.

“Fort Wayne is such a perfect location because there are teams in Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis, Grand Rapids, Columbus and Detroit,” Kwapis said. “The hard part is getting a local program off the ground so we can get enough players out to practice because there are plenty of tournaments to play in.”

Walk/Roll/Ride could attract 300 to Valparaiso’s Fairgrounds Park

VALPARAISO — Last year, the first Spinal Cord Injury Walk/Roll/Ride drew more than 180 people and raised about $15,000.  This year, the event’s organizer and founder of the Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Group hopes the fund-raiser will be even bigger.

“It’s amazing to me how receptive the public is to this cause. There are so many people who have a close connection to it,” said Valparaiso resident Joe White. “That’s what made me want to do it again this year — the feedback I got made me realize it was well worth the time and the effort.”

This year’s event will be held Sunday at Old Fairgrounds Park. In addition to food, music and other festivities, the fund-raiser also includes a poker run, which will end at Martini’s.  White is anticipating close to 300 people this year, including those who took part last year and the new participants who have contacted him in the weeks leading up to the walk. That will mean more money raised by the event.

“(Last year) we split it up three ways. One-third of it went to research; one-third of it went to advocacy; and one-third of it stayed with the group to facilitate activities and things like that,” White said.  White suffered a spinal-cord injury in July 2003 that left him a paraplegic, paralyzed from the waist down.

In the years since his accident, White has started the Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Support Group, and has become increasingly active in raising awareness about spinal-cord injuries.

More on the Spinal Cord Injury fund-raiser

Registration for the Spinal Cord Injury Walk/Roll/Ride 2008 is noon Sunday at Butterfield Pavilion at Old Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso, with the 5K walk following at 1 p.m. There also is a poker run as part of the fund-raiser; registration for that is from 10:30 a.m. to noon, also at the park.

For more information about the walk or the Northwest Indiana Spinal Cord Injury Group, go to www.nwiscig.blogspot.com or contact Joe White at 531-0055.

The highly anticipated 2008 Beijing Paralympics officially started (September 6, 2008). Two websites will have live action: http://www.universalsports.com and www.ParalympicSport.TV

Some schedules posted are Beijing time. Easy math…they’re 12 hours ahead of us (Eastern Standard Time)

You can go to the below link for Beijing current time

http://www.timeanddate.com/worldclock/city.html?n=33

If you’re interested in watching the Paralympic Opening Ceremony…go to the below link… I recommend fast forwarding to either the 20:00 or 25:00 minute mark. The 3.5 hour opening had China’s signature firework show along with an entertaining theatrical performance. USA introduction was at the 1:24:00 mark and the breathtaking closing was around the 2:00:00 mark. If you enjoyed the Olympic opening ceremony, you’ll really be entertained in the final 1.5 hours.
