WHO: All RHI adult athletes.  Players of different skill levels are welcome whether you are a beginner looking to learn or an advanced player looking to hone your skills.

Wheelchair tennis athlete, Noah Yablong (from Fort Wayne, IN) just finished his last match today (8/21/08) in the Open Division at the 2008 USTA National Indoor ROHO Gateway Classic in St. Louis, MO. 

As the Lettered Division concluded on Sunday, August 17, 2008 the Open Division started play on Tuesday, August 19. Yablong’s first Singles match was against Yan Mathieu from Quebec, Canada. Mathiew defeated Yablong 6-1;6-1. This dropped Yablong into the Singles Consolation where he advanced to the semifinals after beating Charles R. Turic from Highland Vill, TX 7-6(2); 6-1 before loosing today (8/21/08) to Corey Blatchford 6-3;6-3

 

In yesterday’s (8/20/08) doubles Yablong partnered with Zachary A. Beaulieu from Champaign, IL. Beaulieu/Yablong lost to #1 ranked open player Tadeusz Kruszelnick from Poland and Sataoshi Saida from Japan 6-1;6-0

***Included at this tournament were five representatives from the USA wheelchair tennis team that’s going to be at the Paralympics (Sept. 6 - 17, 2008). 

From the US Men’s team: Paul Moran from Chicago, Ill; Lee Hinson from Jacksonville, Fla; and Jon Rydberg from Oakdale, Minn.

From the US Woman’s team: Beth Arnoult from Paia, Hawaii; and Kaitlyn Verfuerth from Port Washington, Wis.

ROHO Gateway Classic Results

This past weekend (August 15-17) two local athletes, James Ezell & Kevin Hughes, competed along with 119 wheelchair tennis athletes at the 2008 USTA National Indoor ROHO Gateway Classic (Letter Division) in St. Louis, MO. 

The veteran James Ezell competed in the Quad A Championship game in both Singles and Doubles however came up short loosing both matches. The Quad A Singles Championship game went 3 long sets with James wining the first set 6-4, then loosing the 2nd set in a tiebreaker. The 3rd set James came back from being down 0-4 to tie it at 4 (even) before loosing 4-6. Going into this tournament James was ranked #1 in Quad A Singles. 

Kevin Hughes finished up his first season in loosing both C Single matches (technically won a match by default b/c opponent didn’t show up in time) and C Double match. Below are the final results as posted at: http://tennislink.usta.com/Tournaments/Draws/TournamentDraws.aspx?T=67754

2008 RUN ROLL TENNIS TOURNAMENT

WHAT: An exciting two-day tennis tournament with teams consisting of one wheelchair-tennis player and one ambulatory player! It will be a round-robin tournament with a three-match minimum in both the Youth and Adult divisions. Goodie bags, beverages, and a meal will be provided, along with awards and prizes!

DATE: Saturday, September 20th and Sunday, September 21st

TIME: Matches begin Saturday at 1:00 pm and will run until approximately 7:00 pm. Matches will resume Sunday morning.

MCCANN MEMORIAL WHEELCHAIR OPEN

July 11-13, 2008 the Northwest YMCA, located at 3500 N Chadam Ln in Muncie, IN will hold the McCann Memorial Wheelchair Open for tennis enthusiasts.  The tournament will be played indoors at the Northwest YMCA. Best 2 of 3 sets with a 10 point match tie-breaker for the third set. First match times available July 7th after 3 p.m. on TennisLink or by calling the Northwest YMCA. Check in Friday, July 11th, 6-8 p.m. or before your first match on Saturday. $50 Visa gift cards for winners, $25 Visa gift cards for finalists in all events. Friday night pizza, and lunch & dinner on Saturday provided. Mixed doubles on Sunday. Tournament t-shirt and player gift bag. Free YMCA staffed childcare provided during matches. The Tournament is named after Aly (Ferguson) McCann who died on June 30, 2005 following a car crash on June 29, 2005. She was an innocent victim when her car was struck by a driver fleeing from police. Aly was a stand-out tennis player for Delta High School and Indiana Wesleyan University where she graduated with a degree in Therapeutic Recreation. Aly was 26 years old when she died and had been working for Normal Life of Indiana, an organization that delivers services to people with disabilities, youth with special needs, and adults with barriers to employment. The McCann Memorial Wheelchair Open seeks to preserve the memory of Aly because of her love for people with disabilities and her love for tennis.

Tennis Results and July Event

This past weekend (June 27-29, 2008) at the 24th Annual TWAA Music City Classic local wheelchair tennis athlete James Ezell defeated Shane Coldwell from Georgia 6-1; 6-2 however in the Quarterfinals (C Singles) James lost to USTA #2 ranked Mark La Rotonda 6-0; 6-0. 

  

In Men’s C Doubles James and teammate Bruce Fairbanks lost 6-2; 6-1 to Matthew Clements/Scott Cole. 

  

Upcoming wheelchair tennis: James Ezell, Kevin Hughes, and Noah Yablong (all from Fort Wayne, IN) are all registered to play in the July 11-13, 2008 McCann Memorial Wheelchair open and July 18-20 Midwest Wheelchair Championships.
